When jewellery fits properly, it should become part of your identity.
At JGT Jewellery we purposefully create handmade jewellery that slips into your everyday wear, and stands out when it catches the light or someone compliments it.
Our Bangles and Cuffs come in 3 sizes, small, medium and large and we can also create custom sizes on request.
This guide explains how a well‑fitting bangle should feel on your hand and wrist, and how to decide whether you prefer a snug, everyday or looser, stackable fit.
Why Your Bangle Fit Matters
Bangle fit is about more than just a measurement. It influences:
- How comfortable the bangle or cuff feels for all day wear
- How easy it is to get on and off
- How well it protects both your wrist and the jewellery itself
A bangle that is too tight can be difficult to remove and may leave marks on the skin. One that is too loose can slide down over your hand, and feel distracting.
Getting the fit right means you can enjoy your jewellery without constantly adjusting it.
Three Key Things To A Good Fit
When we help someone choose a bangle, we look at three simple things:
- How it passes over the hand
- How it sits on the wrist
- How much it moves in everyday use
If all three feel right, the size is very likely a good match for you.
Over the hand
For closed bangles, the critical measurement is the widest part of your hand around the knuckles and thumb. The bangle must slide over this point without real struggle.
A good sign: You may feel a brief snug moment over the knuckles, but you do not have to force the bangle, bend your thumb painfully or “screw” it on and off.
If you routinely avoid taking a bangle off because it hurts to remove, it is probably too small. See our video explainer how to measure your bangle size guide.
On the wrist
Once the bangle is on, focus on how it feels at the narrowest part of your wrist.
A comfortable bangle:
- does not bite into the skin when your arm is relaxed,
- does not drop so far down that it presses into the back of your hand
- does not irritate you to wear it
A quick test: try sliding one or two fingers between the bangle and your wrist at the narrowest point. If you cannot fit a finger in at all, it is likely too tight. If you can fit three or more fingers easily, it may be on the loose side for everyday wear.
Movement through the day
A little movement is part of the charm of a bangle, but constant sliding can be irritating.
Ask yourself:
- When your arm is relaxed by your side, does the bangle stay close to the wrist, rather than dropping onto your hand?
- When you type, drive or carry a bag, does it stay roughly in place, or is it always slipping down and needing to be pushed back?
If it spends more time on the back of your hand than on your wrist, the size may be too generous.
How loose should a bangle be?
There is no single “correct” looseness. The right fit depends on how you wear your jewellery and what feels natural to you.
Thinking in three categories can help:
A snug bangle fit is best if you like:
- Wearing one special bangle on its own like the Morgan Hammered Bangle
- People who prefer jewellery that stays put
- Situations where you do not want much movement
A comfortable everyday fit is:
- This is the most popular choice if you're buying a bangle as a gift
- If you are buying your first bangle or choosing a size for daily wear, this is usually the safest option. Our best-selling Molly Silver Bangle is our best-seller and is praised for being a comfortable fit that is also stackable.
A loose bangle fit is best when you:
- Like wearing several bangles together like our Fairy Stacking Bangle
- Prefer a relaxed look with more movement
- Do not mind the sound and movement of jewellery
Common sizing mistakes
A few patterns come up again and again here at JGT which isn't a problem for us as we offer free resizing on all bangles and rings, however if you'd like to get it right first time - avoid these common sizing mistakes when it comes to measuring for a bangle fit:
- Measuring only the wrist for closed bangles: For bangles that do not open, the hand measurement is the limiting factor. A bangle that fits the wrist may still not pass over the knuckles.
- Buying the same size for bangles and cuffs: Round, oval and open cuff designs sit slightly differently on the arm, even when the measurements match. Check your size for each on our bangle size guide.
- Copying someone else’s size: Two people can have similar wrists but very different hand shapes. What fits a friend perfectly may be too tight or too loose for you.
Taking a few minutes to measure your hand properly once will usually save time and worry later.
Checking the fit of bangles you already own
Existing bangles are a useful reference - especially when buying a secret gift for your partner or family member. If you have one bangle you can measure its internal diameter or circumference and use that as your benchmark when reading a size chart.
What to do next
Once you know your size the next step is to match that preference to a specific size using measurements of your hand or a well‑fitting bangle you already own.
- Browse our collection of handcrafted Silver Bangles or Gold Bangles. and find a style you or your recipient will love.
- Check if the bangle you are purchasing is an oval, round or cuff shape (we let you know on all of our product pages).
- Make your purchase with confidence knowing that we offer 90-day returns and free resizing on all bangles.
If you are uncertain between two sizes or buying a gift, do not hesitate to ask us for advice - a quick chat with our staff can often prevent a return and make sure the piece feels as good as it looks.
